Review: Awakening Anne

Kalynn Applewhite’s Awakening Anne is a captivating blend of historical fiction and paranormal mystery that transports readers to Manhattan in 1910. Maggie Ward is an heiress, but she’s far from the idle rich. With a fiercely independent spirit, she runs her own business as a spiritual medium and quickly forms a close friendship with a woman involved in the women’s suffrage movement. At 172 pages, the story is brief and wastes no time in getting to the action. Maggie holds a séance for a grieving widower, leading to the discovery of the dark and unsettling circumstances surrounding his wife’s death. The mystery is engaging and the pacing is perfect. While there isn’t much time to deeply develop the supporting characters, they are believable and interesting. There are some romantic elements and horror imagery as well. The book possessed me, making it nearly impossible to put down until I’d finished it.
